Automated waste collection systems, Finland

The first Envac automated waste collection system was introduced in Finland in 2004 and a system covering an entire residential area was implemented in Espoo’s Suurpelto in October 2010. In Jätkäsaari and Kalasatama installations started in 2011. Caverion is responsible for the design, installation and maintenance of the Envac system.

  • Entire reorganisation of waste management in the new residential area of Suurpelto in Espoo and in the densely populated urban areas of Jätkäsaari and Kalasatama in Helsinki.

  • Envac’s automated waste collection systems implemented during the construction of the areas.
  • The maintenance period of the waste collection systems is approximately 20 years after the completion of investments.
  • The tube system of waste collection improves the safety and pleasantness of the residential areas and facilitates waste recycling. A major part of waste transportation becomes obsolete resulting in less traffic and emissions and improved safety of the yards.

  • In Suurpelto, there are approximately 450 waste collection points, approximately 10 kilometres of pipes and the amount of waste is approximately 10 tons per day.
  • In Jätkäsaari approximately 800 waste collection points, and in Kalasatama approximately 900. The amount of waste in Jätkäsaari is 19 tons per day and in Kalasatama 21 tons per day. There are approximately 10 kilometres of tubes in Jätkäsaari and approximately 13 kilometres in Kalasatama.
